Compliance with Codes and Standards

Members of the PolyTest™ development team have been involved with standards committees across the globe to ensure that the system meets the most up-to-date requirements of the piping industry across all sectors.

This expertise has been essential in the development and validation process and has ensured that the PolyTest system remains at the forefront of inspection options in polyethylene (PE) pipe weld inspection.

The PolyTest team is very active in the development of codes and standards on the non-destructive testing of welded joints in PE pipes. We have current or previous representation on the following committees:

  • ISO/TC138/SC5/WG17 (General properties of pipes, fittings and valves of plastic materials and their accessories – Test methods and basic specifications – Alternative test methods)
  • ASTM E07.06 (Non-destructive testing – Ultrasonic methods)  – no longer actively participating
  • ASME Joint TG on HDPE NDE (BPV III/V/XI) – now merged with BPVC III Working Group
  • CEN/TC249/WG16 (Welding of thermoplastics)

The PolyTest system is compliant with existing and planned codes and standards on the non-destructive testing of welded joints in PE pipes:

  • ASTM E3044:2022 (Standard practice for ultrasonic testing of polyethylene butt fusion joints)
  • ASTM E3170:2018 (Standard practice for phased array ultrasonic testing of polyethylene electrofusion joints)
  • ISO TS 16943 (Thermoplastic pipes for the conveyance of fluids – Inspection of polyethylene electrofusion socket joints using the phased array ultrasonic testing method) - under revision
  • Draft ISO TS 22499 (Thermoplastic pipes for the conveyance of fluids – Inspection of polyethylene butt fusion joints using phased array ultrasonic testing)
  • ASME BPV III Mandatory Supplement XXVI-II (Rules for construction of Class 3 buried polyethylene pressure piping – Ultrasonic examination of high density polyethylene)

PolyTest is also compliant, were possible, with the following general standards on phased array ultrasonic testing:

  • BS EN ISO 13588:2019 (Non-destructive testing of welds – Ultrasonic testing – Use of automated phased array technology
  • BS EN ISO 18563-1:2015 (Non-destructive testing – Characterization and verification of ultrasonic phased array equipment – Part 1: Instruments)
  • BS EN ISO 18563-2:2017 (Non-destructive testing – Characterisation and verification of ultrasonic phased array equipment – Part 2: Probes)
  • BS EN ISO 18563-3:2015 (Non-destructive testing – Characterization and verification of ultrasonic phased array equipment – Part 3: Combined systems)
